Primrose Crochet Baby Dress

This sweet and simple baby dress is lightweight and comfortable to wear, as an everyday outfit or for  festive occasions. The skirt is crocheted in the very beautiful Primrose crochet stitch pattern, which is super easy to make. It gives a light lacey fabric without too many big holes, making it ideal for crocheted baby clothes.

The dress is fine for summer use, but can be used all year round with a long-sleeved body stocking  or T-shirt underneath.

Materials 

• Drops Safran 150 grams (175 grams) 200 grams. (225 grams) 
• 2 buttons size 15 mm. 
• 3 mm crochet hook 
• 3,5 mm crochet hook 
• Darning needle  
• Scissors 

Gauge 

• DC in yoke: 19 Stitches and 11 rows = 10 x 10 cm. 
• Primrose stitch pattern: 8 groups and 14 rows = 10 x 10 cm.

• CH – Chains

• SC – Single Crochet 
• SL ST – Slip Stitch 

Pattern notes

• Measurements: Chest: 51 cm. Full length: 36 cm.

• Explanation: This dress is crocheted in one piece from the top down.  Every size is made larger with an increasing number of rows in the yoke, as well as an increasing number of rounds in the skirt.  Instructions that are written in parentheses are crocheted into the same ST.

Instructions

CH 60 + 1 

Row 1. * DC in next 3 CH. (2 DC in next CH) * Repeat from *-* across the row. You will have 15 increases in total. (75 DC) CH 1 and turn. 

Row 2. * DC in next 4 ST. (2 DC in next ST) * Repeat from *-* across the row. (90 DC) CH 1 and turn. 

Row 3. * DC in next 5 ST. (2 DC in next ST) * Repeat from *-* across the row. (105 DC) CH 1 and turn. 

Row 4. * DC in next 6 ST. (2 DC in next ST) * Repeat from *-* across the row. (120 DC) CH 1 and turn. 

Row 5. * DC in next 7 ST. (2 DC in next ST) * Repeat from *-* across the row. (135 DC) CH 1 and turn. 

Row 6. * DC in next 8 ST. (2 DC in next ST) * Repeat from *-* across the row. (150 DC) CH 1 and turn. 

Row 7. * DC in next 9 ST. (2 DC in next ST) * Repeat from *-* across the row. (165 DC) CH 1 and turn. 

You have now finished your increasing rows in the yoke of the dress. You now have to shape the yoke and divide it by the sleeves. 

Row 8. DC in next 25 ST. (Back piece). Make 4 CH. Skip 32 ST. (Armhole). DC in next 51 ST. (Front). Make 4 CH. Skip 32 ST. (Armhole). DC in the last 25 ST. (Back piece). CH 1 and turn. 

From here the work is continued in the Primrose Stitch Pattern. Use a 3.5 mm crochet hook. 

Row 9. SC in first ST *Skip 1 ST. (1 SC. 2 CH. 1 SC in next ST.) * Repeat from *-* across the row. SC in the last ST. Join the row with a SL ST in the first ST so you will continue to crochet in rounds. 

Round 10. CH 3 (These count as an DC). Make 2 DC in the same ST. * Skip 2 ST. (Make 3 DC into the next CH-space from previous round.) * Repeat from *-*around. Skip the last ST and make a SL ST in the top of the CH 3. 

Round 11. * (1 SC. 2 CH. 1 SC in the middle of the 3 DC from the previous round). Skip 2 ST *. Repeat from *-* around. Make a SL ST into the first CH-space of the round. 

Round 12. CH 3. Make 2 DC in the CH-space from the previous round. * Skip 2 ST. 3 DC in the next CH-space. * Repeat from *-* around. Make a SL ST in the top of the CH 3. 

Round 13-41. Repeat round 11 and 12. The last round will be a repeat of row 11. 

Cut and fasten off your yarn. 

Front and neck edging + buttonholes  

You will now crochet a neat edge in the neckline, as well as the opening at the back of your dress. At the same time, you will make the buttonholes. 

Attach your yarn to the bottom of the opening in the back. Make 7 SC into the edge of the opening on the left side. CH 4. skip next ST (This will create the first buttonhole). Make 6 SC. CH 4. Skip next ST. Make a SC at the top of the neckline. 

SL ST all the way around the neckline. 

Make 2 SC into the side of each DC row, at the edge of the back opening on the right side. 

Finish off with a SL ST into the first ST of the round. Fasten off your yarn and sew in all the yarn ends. 

Sew your buttons in exactly on the opposite side of the buttonholes. 

Sleeve edges  

You will now make a pretty Picot Edging at the edge of the sleeves. The Picot edging is not crocheted into the CH under the armpit. 

Attach the yarn to the first DC in the sleeve. Skip 1 ST. *(1 SC. 2 CH. 1 SC in next ST). Skip 1 ST*. Repeat from *-* until you have 2 ST left in the sleeve. Skip 1 ST. SL ST in the last ST. Cut and fasten off your yarn. 

Weave in all yarn ends thoroughly. 

Repeat the same process for the other sleeve.
