This lovely and soft little cardigan is crocheted in 100% soft baby merino, and it is designed with a really good fit for a chubby little baby.
The cardigan is worked in one piece from the top down, which leaves very little assembly work for you. Only the sleeves are sewn together in the end.
This is among other reasons is why absolutely love to make this cardigan. And I have already made a dozen of these for my two little nieces.

Rows 15-36. HDC in every ST of the row. You will have 22 rows from the armhole to the hem of your cardigan (94 HDC). CH 1 and turn.
Front and neck edge + buttonholes
- Fasten your yarn at the opening of your cardigan at the bottom.
- SC from the bottom of the edge opening up to the neckline. Start from the front.
- When you get to the neckline, CH 3 and turn your work.
- Skip first 2 ST (You have now formed a buttonhole).
- Make 6 SC. CH 2. Skip 2 ST*. Repeat from *-* until you have 5-6 buttonholes in your cardigan. Fasten off your yarn.
- Attach your yarn to the opposite side of the opening in your cardigan. Make 2 rows of SC at the edge of the opening, starting from the front.
- You will now make a round of SC all the way around the edge of your cardigan, to give it a nice finish. The edge is worked from the front and goes all the way around the neckline and the bottom edge.
- When you get to your buttonholes, work 2 SC directly into the buttonholes.
- Fasten off and weave in the yarntails.
- Place your buttons exactly opposite the buttonholes on the opposite side.
- Sew the buttons into your cardigan.
Sleeves
The sleeves are crocheted in rows back and forth and sewn together at the end. You will also work your ST into the 3 CH under the armhole and in the side of the stitches on each side of the 3 CH. A decrease is made in each side on every 3rd row.
Attach your yarn in the middle CH in the armhole.
Row 1-2. HDC in every ST of the row (41 HDC). CH 1 and turn.
Row 3. Make a HDC DEC. HDC in every ST of the row until you have 2 ST left. Again make a HDC DEC (39 HDC). CH 1 and turn.
Row 4-5. Repeat row 1-2 (39 HDC). CH 1 and turn.
Row 6. Repeat row 3 (37 HDC). CH 1 and turn.
Row 7-8. Repeat row 1-2 (37 HDC). CH 1 and turn.
Row 9. Repeat row 3 (35 HDC). CH 1 and turn.
Row 10-11. Repeat row 1-2 (35 HDC). CH 1 and turn.
Row 12. Repeat row 3 (33 HDC). CH 1 and turn.
Row 13-14. Repeat row 1-2 (33 HDC). CH 1 and turn.
Row 15. Repeat row 3 (31 HDC). CH 1 and turn.
Row 16-17. Repeat row 1-2 (31 HDC). CH 1 and turn.
Row 18. Repeat row 3 (29 HDC). CH 1 and turn.
Row 19-20. Repeat row 1-2 (29 HDC). CH 1 and turn.
Row 21. Repeat row 3 (27 HDC). CH 1 and turn.
Row 22-23. Repeat row 1-2 (27 HDC).

A lovely pattern, but what stitch do I use for the test gauge? Thank you
Thank You 🙂 I use Half Double Crochet (HDC)
Awesome!
Thank You 🙂
Hi there,
In the pattern notes, there are 3 different numbers after each measurement. What do these mean?
There are 6 different numbers. These are for every size 🙂
Does the pattern you purchase have more detail then the feee pattern as far as stitch count for sleeve rows and front side with the button holes?
no it is the same pattern, only with more sizes. 🙂
I think the number is off on row 3
No the number is correct in every row. You need to read and follow the pattern correctly 🙂
Wonderful pattern and so nice video to watch. Please how many SC shall be at the final on one side after edging? I thought 1 SC to each row, but seams to less when counting 6 buttonholes. Thanks.
1 sc per row is not enough. I make approx 3 sc for each 2 rows.
Thank you so much for sharing!
You are very welcome 🙂

How many balls of wool do I need. It doesn’t say.
Thanks Catherine
Well it says to 100 grams, so it depends on how much yarn there is in each ball. I used 2 balls of 50 grams, of Drops baby merino.
Hi Marie!
I hope you are well!
Do you recall which color you used from Drops Baby Merino?
I love your sweater pattern, and so appreciate you sharing it!!
Have a great day! Renee

Have a wonderful day 🙂
Un grand merci pour votre tutoriel très bien réalisé et expliqué. Tout était très clair même si je ne maîtrise pas totalement l’anglais ; j’ai utilisé la traduction Google. Tout était parfait.
Many thanks for your very well done and explained tutorial. Everything was very clear even though I don’t fully master English; I used Google translate. Everything was perfect.
Hi Marie, does the cardigan meant to come out that big? It seems like its too big for a newborn
Hi Gabi,
I am not sure what you mean by “that big”. The measurements of the cardigan will defend on your tension and type of yarn which you use.
Can the sleeves be worked in the round to avoid seaming? (Love your patterns!)
Yes absolutely😊
